Tristan Smith
Professor of Energy & Transport
Tristan is Co-lead of the Shipping and Oceans Research Group and Professor in Energy and Transport at UCL. Since 2010 Tristan has grown a substantial group focused on modelling and analysis of shipping’s efficiency and emissions. He led the 3rd IMO GHG Study, is an author in the 4th IMO GHG Study, is lead author of ISO 19030, and has been involved in numerous projects across the academic, industry and policy domains.

Nishatabbas Rehmatulla
Principal Research Fellow
Nishatabbas is Co-lead of the Shipping and Oceans Research Group and is a Principal Research Fellow in UCL’s Energy Institute. His research explores the barriers to shipping decarbonisation and solutions to accelerate zero carbon transitions. He holds a PhD in Energy and Transport and specialises in social science and private governance approaches to maritime sustainability.

Nujood Al Mulla

Jesse Ralph-Gbobo
PhD Student
Jesse is a PhD student in the UCL Energy Institute researching the structural evolution of Nigeria’s state-level electricity markets. His research bridges the gap between Energy market theory and microeconomics to identify market designs that deliver low-cost energy, enhanced grid security, and a clear path for renewable energy adoption.

Colin Robertshaw
PhD Student

Isabelle Rojon
PhD Student
Isabelle is a part time PhD student at UCL’s Energy Institute, where she investigates how multilateral development banks mainstream climate action among their financial intermediary clients. Alongside her academic research, she works as a Consultant for the World Bank, focusing on maritime transport. Prior to this role, she spent six years at UMAS International, where she led the organisation’s work on maritime climate policy.

James Stewart
Research Assistant
James is a Research Assistant within the UCL Energy Institute Shipping Group where he specialises in the application of big data to understand current and future trends in the maritime shipping industry, as well as the potential implications of decarbonisation policy. His role has more recently evolved into facilitating the development of statistical capacity across states in the Caribbean, Pacific and Africa.
